Root Canals
Endodontic treatment, also known as root canal therapy, is performed to save severely damaged or infected teeth. Encino Dental Group's Dr. Mamaliger and our highly skilled team specialize in providing root canal therapy of the highest quality to patients from Encino, CA. Our goal is to restore oral health and preserve natural teeth with advanced techniques and compassionate care.
Deep decay, fractures, or trauma can infect, inflame, or damage the pulp tissue, the soft tissue within the tooth. Untreated infection can spread and cause severe pain and even tooth loss. Root canal therapy aims to remove infected tissue, disinfect and clean the tooth's inside, and seal the tooth to prevent further infection.
Signs You May Need a Root Canal
Root canal treatment may be required if you have any of these symptoms:
- Pain in the teeth, particularly when biting down or applying pressure
- Sensitivity to cold or heat for a long time
- The gums may swell or become tender near the affected tooth
- The teeth may darken or discolor.
- Consistent bad taste in the mouth
If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to seek dental care immediately to prevent an infection from spreading.
Our Root Canal Procedure
Encino Dental Group strives to make root canal treatments as stress-free and comfortable as possible. What to expect during your procedure:
- Examination & Diagnosis: Dr. Mamaliger performs a thorough examination of your teeth, including x-rays, if needed, to determine the extent of infection or damage. Based on the findings, a diagnosis is made. Root canal therapy can be recommended to save the teeth.
- Anesthesia & Sedation: Local anesthesia is administered before the procedure to ensure you are comfortable throughout the entire treatment. Sedation may be an option for patients who have dental anxiety or complex cases.
- Pulp Removal: Dr. Mamaliger creates a small hole in the tooth to reach the infected root canals and pulp chamber. The infected tissue is removed with specialized instruments. The interior of the teeth is then cleaned and disinfected, removing bacteria and debris.
- Canal Filling & Sealing: After the pulp has been removed and the canals thoroughly cleaned, the spaces will be sealed and reinfected with a biocompatible filler, usually gutta-percha. To restore the tooth's structure and strength, a temporary or permanent filling will be used to seal off the opening.
- Restoration: A dental crown may strengthen and protect the tooth after the root canal treatment, particularly if it has been severely damaged or weakened. Dr. Mamaliger can discuss with you the best options for restoring your tooth.
